Clarksville child dies of fluplications - Clarksville Leaf Chronicle

Stephanie Ingersoll, The Leaf-Chronicle 3:46 p.m. CST December 26, 2014

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – A Montgomery County child recently died of influenza, and health officials fear there could be more deaths in what is expected to be a severe flu season.

The Tennessee Department of Health confirmed Friday that there have been three pediatric deaths across the state in December associated with influenza.

Two of those cases were from Middle Tennessee, and one was in East Tennessee, said spokesman Bill Christian.

“We cannot share any further information about any specific case or patient, but express our deepest sympathy for the families of these children,” he said. “Unfortunately, Tennessee sees an average of two to three seasonal flu deaths among children each year, and the death of any child is tragic.”

With the peak of flu season still a month or two away, many more children are at risk.

“We are anticipating a severe flu season in Tennessee, and our surveillance shows seasonal flu activity is increasing in all regions of the state,” Christian said. “We urge anyone who has not yet received a flu vaccination to get one now before flu starts circulating widely in the community.”

The dominant influenza strain so far this season is H3N2, a type that has led to a big increase in hospitalizations and deaths in other years it was prevalent. And to make matters worse, about half of the H3N2 cases analyzed show a mutated version of the virus, which means this year’s flu vaccines will likely provide less protection.

While the vaccine may be less effective, local, state and national health agencies still urge getting vaccinated now, before the peak season hits in January and February.

There is no word on which strain of flu was diagnosed in any of the three Tennessee child deaths.

The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months and older as the first and most important step in protecting against seasonal flu viruses. A flu vaccine offers the best protection against the potentially fatal illness. Once vaccinated, it takes about two weeks for the body’s immune response to fully kick in.

Even those who get the mutated strain of the H3N2 may benefit if they had the flu vaccine ahead of time because it could provide partial protection, and symptoms could be milder, said Joey Smith, public health director for the Montgomery County Health Department.
