Clarksville's Customs House Museum August 2014 Exhibits and Activities - Clarksville Online




The Customs House Museum and Cultural CenterClarksville, TN – The Customs House Museum and Cultural Center is located in historic downtown Clarksville, Tennessee. Come explore an entire city block featuring large gallery spaces filled with fine art, science and history.


In the month of August, the Museum will feature Serving Abroad: Through Their Eyes, Greg Williamson: With the Troops, Paul Harmon: Inner Voices, The Outsiders: Folk Art from the Hicks & Vander Elst Collections, Technically Speaking, My Own Backyard: The Art of Patsy Sharpe, Art & Lunch: Matisse / Picasso – Twin Giants of Modern Art, and Miniature Circus.

Serving Abroad: Through Their Eyes

Through September 7th


A video installation by Lincoln Schatz sponsored by the US State Department and Art in Embassies. AIE commissioned renowned artist Lincoln Schatz to create a video montage incorporating audio and images selected from photographs of daily life abroad by current and former military and Foreign Service personnel. Schatz’s work will later be installed as a site-specific installation for the permanent art collection in the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Greg Williamson: With the Troops

Through August 31st


Greg Williamson is a multimedia journalist with The Leaf Chronicle. This exhibit showcases Williamson’s photography during his three weeks embedded with the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, logging many hours of flight time traveling to and from Forward Out Bases.

Paul Harmon: Inner Voices

Through September 7th


International artist Paul Harmon exhibits his lyrical paintings in the Crouch Gallery. The themes of Harmon’s paintings always incorporate poetry, prose and ideas from the artist’s interests and experiences.

The Outsiders: Folk Art from the Hicks & Vander Elst Collections

Robert Hicks is a collector of mostly Southern Outsider Art. He was the first Tennessean to be included in Art & Antiques magazine’s Top 100 Collectors in America.

Art & Lunch: Matisse / Picasso – Twin Giants of Modern Art

Hungry for some art? Bring your lunch and enjoy this film on Matisse and Picasso. In conjunction with the exhibit Paul Harmon: Inner Voices. Free admission to program. Bagged lunches welcome.


Miniature Circus


The Volunteer model train engineers have “put up the Big Top” for your viewing pleasure. Special activities will be featured Tuesday, August 5th from 11:00am–3:00pm; Wednesday, August 6th from 1:00pm–3:00pm; Thursday, August 7th from 11:00am–3:00pm.


Activities are free with paid admission or Museum Membership.

The Explorer’s Gallery is packed with fun, learning and fantasy in Aunt Alice’s Attic, McGregor’s Market and kitchen, and of course – the Bubble Cave! Finally, get “all aboard” to see our fantastic model trains. Our volunteer engineers “ride the rails” every Sunday afternoon from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.


Regular museum hours are 10:00am to 5:00pm Tuesday through Saturday, and 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Sundays. Adult admission is $7.00, Senior Citizens and College ID $5.00, Ages 6 to 18 $3.00, and under six years and Museum members are free.
