Clarksville's Customs House Museum October 2014 Exhibits and Activities - Clarksville Online





The Customs House Museum and Cultural CenterClarksville, TN – The Customs House Museum and Cultural Center is located in historic downtown Clarksville, Tennessee. Come explore an entire city block featuring large gallery spaces filled with fine art, science and history.


In the month of August, the Museum will feature Leslie Shiels: Dizygotic, Women Painting Women, Recent Works by Susan Bryant and Billy Renkl, Richard Hogan: My View, Margaret Evangeline: From the Collection, Aletha Carr: New Connections, Children’s Room: The Wonders of Light, Family Day: Bubble Blast in the Courtyard, Let’s Find: Bugs, Fall Break Model Trains, Art & Lunch Film: Man Ray: Prophet of Avant-Garde, and Pumpkin Palooza.

Leslie Shiels: Dizygotic

Ohio artist Leslie Shiels explores the concept of twins through depictions of animals. The paintings in this series are mirror images that are supported by the allegory of Fraternal twins; very much the same but completely different and sometimes opposite.

Customs House Museum celebrates women artists with its annual exhibit. This year’s slate of artists hailing from Tennessee, California, Georgia, and Ohio, offer a variety of artistic views of the female form.

Margaret Evangeline is a contemporary painter, sculptor, and installation artist who lives and works in New York City. See her paintings from the museum collection, including our never-before displayed “Flag Veil River.”

Aletha Carr: New Connections

Through October 31st


Carr’s assemblages consist of discarded objects, such as marbles, action figures, and electronics. Her work is a reminder of our collective history, and observing it is an act of remembering and re-interpreting.



Activities


This Month in the Children’s Room: The Wonders of Light

Tuesday – Friday: 10:00am–5:00pm, Saturday: 10:00am–12:00pm


October’s activities feature shadows, optical illusions, reflections, prisms, mirrors, books, puzzles, crafts, toys, games, poems, and the eye, as well as the sun, moon, and stars. Activities vary weekly. The Children’s Room is located in the Kimbrough Gallery. These activities are included in your regular admission.


Family Day: Bubble Blast in the Courtyard

Saturday, October 4th, 10:00am–3:00pm


Come test our bubble-makers or bring one of your own. Remember, just about anything you can blow through is a potential bubble-maker. The activities in the courtyard are free to all. Regular admission will be charged for touring the museum. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held October 25th, from 10:00am–3:00pm


Let’s Find: Bugs

October 8th & 9th, 10:30am–11:30am


Children 2 – 5 years old and their adults are invited to help Ms. Sue look for bugs in the museum. We will also read a story and make a craft. This activity is free with your paid admission or museum membership. Siblings are always welcome.


Fall Break Model Trains

Our model trains will be making special runs for Fall Break!

October 14th & 16th, 1:00pm–3:00pm and October 15th & 17th, 10:00am–12:00pm


Art & Lunch Film: Man Ray: Prophet of Avant-Garde

October 23rd, 12:00pm


Bring your lunch and enjoy a film on artist Man Ray. In conjunction with the exhibit Even When: Recent Works by Susan Bryant and Billy Renkl. Free admission to film. Bagged lunches welcome.


Pumpkin Palooza

October 28th, 6:00pm–8:00pm


The Customs House Museum will be holding a carved and painted pumpkin contest in both youth (ages 10-17) and adult (ages 18 and up) categories. Entry fee is $3.00 for youth and $5.00 for adults. Entries will be accepted October 24th and 25th. A Pumpkin Palooza event will be held on Oct. 28th, where ribbons and awards will be announced.

The Museum will be closed Monday, October 13th for Columbus Day.

Finally, get “all aboard” to see our fantastic model trains. Our volunteer engineers “ride the rails” every Sunday afternoon from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.


Regular museum hours are 10:00am to 5:00pm Tuesday through Saturday, and 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Sundays. Adult admission is $7.00, Senior Citizens and College ID $5.00, Ages 6 to 18 $3.00, and under six years and Museum members are free.
